Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage

What is Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage?

Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage is not required, but it can be very helpful in several instances including if you get into an accident and the person in the other vehicle does not have Liability Insurance at all or they do not have enough coverage to pay for all of your damages.

There are 3 different types of insurance coverage when it comes to drivers being uninsured or underinsured.

  • Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage
  • Underinsured Motorist Insurance Coverage
  • Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Insurance Coverage

The coverages can be different depending on the state, so we would advise that you talk to one of our Commercial Insurance Specialists and they will be able to advise you on limits and deductibles based on your state.

Who is Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage for?

Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage is for anyone who operates a motor vehicle. It is not required, but the minimal increase in your monthly premium is well worth it if you are in an accident with a person who is not insured or underinsured.

There are still a lot of drivers on the road that do not have Liability Insurance and even more that are just covered with the minimum coverages, which may not pay for your damages.

What are the requirements for Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage?

Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage and Underinsured Motorist Insurance Coverage

Both Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Insurance Coverage will cover you if a person is not insured or just doesn’t have enough coverage to pay for damages.

The coverage offers protection against medical expenses like medical bills and can even help with lost wages and pain and suffering, something that you will not get from your standard coverage.

You will need to choose your limits which are usually shown by 2 numbers ($10,000/$20,000). The first number represents how much will be paid per person and the second number represents how much will be paid per accident.

Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Insurance Coverage

Uninsured Motorist Property Damage coverage varies by state, so you can ask one of our Commercial Insurance Specialists if this coverage applies to you. If it does, it will help pay for damage to your vehicle when the other person is not insured.

Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage Example

Why do you need it?

You are driving to work just like every other day and as your light turns green you proceed through the intersection. A car coming from the right runs a red light and clips the back end of your car.

The bumper of your car is completely torn off and you have to go to the hospital because your neck was hurting after the accident.

The driver does not have insurance. You would have been in trouble if you had not decided to get Uninsured Motorist Insurance. Your coverage limits of $30,000/$60,000 is more than enough to cover your X-rays and some physical therapy as well. On the other hand, you did not get the Uninsured Motorist Property Damage, so you may be liable for the damages to your bumper.
