Pay-Per-Load Insurance Coverage

What is Pay-Per-Load Insurance Coverage?

Basically, Pay-Per-Load Insurance Coverage is a short-term load coverage that allows you to quickly expand the coverage on your cargo. It allows you to put extra protection on certain loads that are of a much higher value. Insurance carriers would never be able to cover everything under one policy for motor carriers that have a wide variety of cargo. By allowing you to add on coverage for a short time, you can keep your overall premiums low and pay for the extra coverage when you need it.

Who needs Pay-Per-Load Insurance Coverage?

Pay-Per-Load or Short-Term Insurance Coverage can apply to almost any carrier that is moving a high-dollar item that could be costly if damaged or stolen. Items like electronics and certain desirable metals, like copper, are not covered by a basic liability policy.

What are the requirements for Pay-Per-Load Coverage?

Pay-per-Load Coverage is dependent on the particular load that you are insuring. There are not necessarily requirements unless they are set by your client or the shipper of the goods. That amount would typically be based on the value of the cargo you are transporting.

Pay-Per-Load Insurance Coverage Example

Why do you need it?

Using the pay-per-load option can increase the value and expand your coverage to include coverages a liability policy does not include.

You could get up to $2 million in coverage and save as much as 80 percent on your transactional cargo insurance costs.

Let’s say a shipper requires $750,000 in cargo coverage. You could just get a short-term coverage of $750K for that one load and that would beat out whatever cargo coverage you already have.

By doing this you can assure your clients that the cargo is fully protected which will allow you to go after lucrative spot market opportunities.
