Commercial Auto Insurance

Box Truck Insurance

Box truck insurance is a specialized form of commercial auto insurance designed specifically for businesses that operate box trucks. A box truck, also known as a cube truck, straight truck, or box van, is a vehicle with an enclosed cargo area that is separate from the cab. These trucks are commonly used for transporting goods, moving furniture, deliveries, or other commercial purposes.

What is a Box Truck Insurance Policy?

Box truck insurance is essential for businesses that rely on box trucks for their operations. This includes moving companies, delivery services, freight and cargo haulers, construction companies transporting tools and materials, and food distribution businesses handling bulk food or beverages. It provides tailored coverage to protect against the specific risks associated with these industries.

Who needs Box Truck Insurance?

  • Moving Companies: Businesses that provide moving services for residential or commercial customers.
  • Delivery Services: Companies that use box trucks to deliver products, packages, or materials.
  • Freight and Cargo Haulers: Businesses involved in transporting goods or freight from one location to another.
  • Construction Companies: Companies using box trucks to transport tools, equipment, or materials to job sites.
  • Food Distribution: Companies transporting food or beverages in bulk.

Why do you need Box Truck Insurance?

Box truck insurance is essential to protect businesses from financial losses related to vehicle damage, cargo loss, or third-party property damage. It helps cover risks from accidents involving these large vehicles, safeguards valuable or fragile goods through cargo insurance, and ensures compliance with legal requirements for commercial operations. Many contracts and leasing agreements also mandate proof of insurance, making it a critical component for operating a box truck business.

  • Protecting Your Business: Box trucks are often used to transport goods and equipment, and any damage to the truck, goods, or third-party property can lead to significant financial loss. Insurance ensures that these risks are covered.
  • Legal Requirements: Depending on the state and the size of the truck, box truck insurance (especially liability coverage) may be required by law to operate commercially. Many businesses also require proof of insurance for contracts or leasing arrangements.
  • Risk of Accidents and Damage: Box trucks are large vehicles that may be involved in accidents with other vehicles, pedestrians, or property. Proper insurance minimizes the financial impact of such incidents.
  • Cargo Protection: If you’re transporting valuable or fragile goods, having cargo insurance ensures you’re financially protected in case of damage, loss, or theft.

Box Truck Insurance Coverages

Types of Insurance Coverages

Box truck insurance provides coverage for the vehicle, driver, and any cargo being transported. The coverage can vary depending on the needs of the business, but it typically includes a combination of the following types of insurance:

Key Components of Box Truck Insurance:

This is the foundation of box truck insurance, covering damages to the truck itself and liability for accidents that occur while driving.

  • Liability Coverage: Covers bodily injury and property damage caused to others in an accident where the box truck driver is at fault.
  • Collision Coverage: Pays for damages to your box truck if it collides with another vehicle or object, regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Covers non-collision damages to your box truck, such as theft, vandalism, or weather-related damages.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Protects you if the driver of another vehicle is at fault but doesn’t have enough insurance to cover your damages or injuries.

This covers the goods being transported in the box truck in case of loss or damage. Cargo insurance is especially important for businesses that move products or materials for clients. Coverage limits and exclusions will vary depending on the type of cargo.

General liability insurance helps protect the business from legal claims if someone is injured or property is damaged due to the business’s operations. For example, if a delivery driver causes an accident while driving the box truck, the business may be held liable for damages. This coverage would help with legal costs and settlements.

This includes both collision and comprehensive coverage to repair or replace the truck if it’s damaged in an accident or by other incidents like fire or flooding.

For businesses transporting goods for others, motor truck cargo insurance is necessary. This protects the cargo in the event of a loss or damage while it’s being hauled in the box truck.

If the driver uses their personal vehicle for business purposes (e.g., delivering goods using their own box truck), non-owned vehicle insurance can provide coverage for liability in case of an accident.

If your business employs drivers or other staff, workers’ compensation insurance is essential. It covers medical expenses and lost wages for employees injured on the job, including while driving a box truck.

For businesses that operate box trucks without a trailer (bobtailing), bobtail insurance provides coverage for the truck when it’s being driven without a load, such as when the driver is returning to base after making a delivery.

CASE STUDY

Company A, a 9-truck carrier, approached CNS due to a problem in their operations. Their surplus lines carrier who was charging $190,000 annually for 9 trucks was canceling their liability insurance. The trucking company called CNS to see what could be done.

CNS reviewed carrier’s roadside safety, performance, driver files, loss ratio history, systems, and process. CNS analyzed the company had no losses but high BASIC SMS scores. Upon further investigation there were only two drivers that had bad records.

CNS developed hiring and qualification standards and implemented these standards within the company. The company also engaged CNS to manage their divers through drivers qualifications, monitoring drivers and training drivers.

As shown in the graph, the clients safety scores improved year after year.

As a result of the improved safety scores CNS Insurance was able to secure insurance which saved the company $100,000.00 in annual premium. The client has been a loyal CNS and CNS Insurance customer for 6 years.
